CERN provides a limited amount of seed funding for projects using technologies with potential applications in the medical field through the Medical Applications (MA) budget. CERN personnel working on such projects can apply for resources, including the purchase of materials and the funding of researchers. Since 2014, over 50 projects have been funded by the MA budget, with an average grant of 75 kCHF per project.

Just like the KT Fund, the MA budget highlights CERN’s commitment to maximising the societal impact of its fundamental research.

The procedure is very similar to that of the KT Fund. However, before submitting a proposal to the selection committee, a short presentation needs to be made to the MAPF (Medical Applications Project Forum) to assess the potential of the project and ensure it aligns with CERN's strategy for medical applications. The forum is composed of CERN experts in medical applications (appointed by the Heads of Department) and is chaired by the Medical Applications advisor.

Please contact the KT MA team as soon as possible to organise this.

Possible dates to present your project to the MAPF: 12 & 19 March 2025 (you will be given a slot between 2PM-4PM)

After the MAPF presentation, you need to submit your refined proposal by the submission deadline. 31 March 2025

On the day of the selection committee meeting, you will need to make a short presentation to support your proposal. This step is crucial for the final evaluation of your project, so please reserve the whole afternoon.

Selection committee: 8 May 2025
