CERN Medical Applications budget – Application & Selection Process
Current CERN Members of the Employed Personnel can apply, if their project is related to medical applications and meets the conditions described below.
In order to be considered for funding, projects should meet the following conditions:
- The project proposal must be approved by the Department Head;
- The salary cost of staff members involved in the project are covered by the Department;
- The project is based on CERN technology or know-how;
- The Intellectual Property (IP) required to execute the project is owned or co-owned by CERN and there is no conflict over the IP required to execute the project.
- The project is related to medical applications. If not you should apply for the KT fund.
The grants can fund material or students and fellows to work on the proposed medical applications project.
Contact the Medical Applications support team (KT.MedicalApplications@cern.ch) as early as possible to communicate your intention to submit a project and to schedule a presentation at the Medical Applications Project Forum (see the corresponding instructions).
Please use the MA budget submission form covering the following elements:
Project description:
- The CERN technology on which the project is based
- Deliverables
- Schedule and key milestones
- Organisation (roles and responsibilities, key competencies)
- Overall financial planning and requested budget
Market potential or user community:
- Field of application
- Competing technologies
- Identified and/or potential commercial partners, identified user community
You also have this template for the final presentation to the selection committee.
Project proponents may request the support of KT experts in market analysis and to help assess the dissemination potential of the related technology: please contact us at KT.MedicalApplications@cern.ch
Presentation to the Medical Applications Project Forum & submission procedure
-
You will need to present your proposal in a MAPF meeting ahead of the application deadline. Please contact the MAPF Scientific Secretary Mary Touranakou (Mary.Touranakou@cern.ch) and KT.MedicalApplications@cern.ch to know the dates of the upcoming MAPF meetings and schedule your presentation.
-
After receiving feedback from the MAPF and KT Medical Applications, please print and add your signature to the proposal
- Send the final proposal to both the KT-Fund@cern.ch AND KT.MedicalApplications@cern.ch
- The Knowledge Transfer group will contact your Department Head for signature.
After approval of your Department Head, you will be invited to the next CERN MA Budget Selection Committee meeting. The selection committee is composed of CERN's department heads or their representatives.
During this meeting you will need to:
- Give a short oral presentation on your proposal (usually around 5-10 min); please use this template for the presentation
- Answer questions from the Committee members
Should you be unable to attend in person, you can nominate a replacement.
After your presentation, the Selection Committee will evaluate your proposal based on the following aspects:
1. Proposal Quality: Overall quality of contents and structure of proposal/presentation, presence of committed internal contributors (like CERN Departments or Projects), clear and realistic milestones and budget planning.
2. Dissemination Probability: Likelihood that the outcome of the project will be used outside High Energy Physics, better if substantiated by the presence of committed external contributors (other labs or industry).
3. Scientific/Technical value: Comparison with state of the art, envisioned innovation potential.
4.Possible Impact: Estimation of the potential return for the Organization in terms of image and/or IP exploitation rights.
5. Medical Impact: Is there a clearly identified medical need? What is the impact on the medical field (scale, relevance) ?
6. Potential to generate revenues: High score for projects which have a high probability to generate a financial return.
The Selection Committee will rate every proposal. The applicants will be informed about their decision by e-mail a few weeks after the MA budget Selection Committee meeting.
