TERA was founded on 15 September 1992 by Ugo Amaldi, Elio Borgonovi, Giampiero Tosi and Gaudenzio Vanolo. Few years later, Roberto Orecchia joined the Board. Since 1995 the Accelerators and Detectors Section is hosted by CERN (Bld.182) and most activities have been performed in collaboration with CERN physicists and engineers.
Since 1992, TERA has been active in Research and Development in hadron therapy, giving also birth to successful offsprings. The main ones are the CNAO Foundation - which has built and manages the Italian National Center for ion therapy in Pavia, the company ADAM - which in 2013 was bought by the UK Company AVO and is now building in Daresbury the first proton therapy linac called LIGHT, and the start-up EBA-Med - which is developing an AI-based cardio-kit that will allow the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias with commercial proton therapy accelerators.
At the Symposium, the technical directors of the Foundation will describe chronologically thirty years of TERA activities and four illustrious keynote speakers will review the status of the field.<
